For centuries, the motto Masterclass has been carrying the well-known feature of elitism by choosing carefully the most deserving musicians, painters, or actors who were given the privilege to learn from an expert (maestro or master) in a certain artistic field. In this case, it is about the same-named congress held by the ophthalmological clinic LaserFocus, in the same spirit of the etymological superlative, by bringing together the most eminent ophthalmologists on this exceptional occasion. To that end, Masterclass gathers domestic and world-renowned experts in order to spread experiences, exchange opinions, and develop future practice more efficiently within this scientific niche.
During this one-day seminar, ophthalmologists have a unique opportunity to hear a series of expositions and presentations by the host and world-renowned expert Prof. Dr. Mirko R. Jankov, as well as by domestic and foreign experts in the world of ophthalmology. An exceptional and general satisfaction and honor of the hosts is that in recent years, guests and lecturers at this event were experts like prof. dr Theo Zailer (Switzerland), dr Paulo Schor (Brazil), dr Jonathan Lake (Brazil) and dr Efekan Coskunseven (Turkey), and many others who have ennobled this event with their selfless contribution.
The lecturers immerse themselves in various areas of ophthalmology, not only in the form of processes and the use of the latest techniques in science and high technology but also through searching for the right way to approach and establish an individual relationship with the patient during the preparation, intervention and recovery period.
The purpose of this international seminar is, among other things, to create an ophthalmological platform and establish the Serbian tradition of holding large-scale congress events on the domestic scientific field, where the world’s biggest names in ophthalmology will work together and share experiences of the latest trends with colleagues from Serbia and all the region.
This gathering, which is traditionally held in Belgrade, is an offshoot of the previous 10 gatherings which have so far established an exclusive practice of exchanging experiences, opinions, and solutions for the smallest details in the form of side effects that can result from surgery. In this way, LaserFocus and Masterclass inevitably take their place among the leaders in promoting this medical field and its development in practice.
Since Masterclass previously dealt mainly with topics in the field of refractive surgery, cataract surgery, and keratoconus, it can be reliably said that over time, the range of practice of this scientific gathering has expanded also to other fields of ophthalmology. In addition to that, one of the established sections on the Masterclass is the section “Open case”, which presents unusual cases, the circumstances under which they may arise (or more precisely their causes), as well as how they can be solved. The doctors underline the steps that need to be taken in relation to patients in each segment of lectures and presentations. To that end, this relationship, to which Dr. Jankov himself places a sharp focus, is a relation that must be established primarily by unconditional trust, professionalism, and care, and then by systematic consultations and guidance of the patient through all phases of intervention, as well as in the postoperative course, which must be respected in order to make these treatments as effective as possible.
The lecturers have an interactive approach to the course constantly commenting with the audience on videos of interventions and ending in questions and discussions. Therefore, this huge scientist workshop provoked positive reactions from participating doctors, who found this type of exchange of knowledge and experience extremely useful. Due to the expressed desire and need of ophthalmologists from Serbia and the whole region to constantly improve their knowledge and skills in this way, Masterclass was accredited by the Ministry of Health as a relevant congress event.
We can finally express here that We are glad to participate in the modernization of ophthalmological techniques, as well as in the improvement of the use of technological means and selflessly teaching our colleagues who will have the occasion to practically discover the “craft secrets” instructed directly by the world’s top masters in ophthalmology.
