Autorefractometry

Autorefractometry is a method that enables one to automatically determine objective refraction.

This is usually the first diagnostic examination, i.e. the initial method to determine refraction (diopter). The principle is to notice the image that is projected on to the retina. Then the doctor determines what diopter is needed to achieve the clearest picture on the retina. The instrument automatically measures the diopter, and the process of measuring lasts only a few seconds.

After this, the doctor measures your visual acuity and suggests how to correct the refractive error. For this examination, there is no need either to use eye drops beforehand or cycloplegia. Still, the process is repeated even after the cycloplegia because of the possible spasm of accommodation, especially with patients suffering from hyperopia. The examined person should only press the chin and the forehead on the holder of a special instrument called an autorefractometer. The eye examination is painless and contactless.
