Ferrara Rings
The alternative treatment of keratoconus is the implantation of Ferrara rings into the cornea. They are indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate keratoconus, where the cornea is asymmetrical and irregular. Implanting the rings to the middle periphery of the cornea makes its central part flattened and more regular, which reduces myopia, especially astigmatism, and increases the quality of vision.
The implantation lasts 15 minutes with topical anesthetic – numbing eye drops. The doctor creates a “corridor” with a special spatula in deeper layers of the cornea where he implants one or two half rings. The protective contact lens is placed on the eye instead of an eye patch until the next day, and postoperative treatment with eyedrops last several weeks after the intervention.
Ferrara rings can be used with other corrective methods, such as Ultra B2, or in more rare cases, with limited laser eye surgery PRK.
