The optic nerve is responsible for connecting the eye with the brain and it is made up of 1,2 millions of fibres. Its function is to transfer the impulses, which are generated in retina, through its fibers transfer the impulses to the brain, where it is later interpreted as an image. Using the ophthalmoscope, we can easily see the beginning of the optical nerve. It is a part of the central, not peripheral nervous system.
The word “optical”, after which it has been given the name, comes from the Greek word “optikos”, which means sight, view.
